Two teams, two flags, one long battlefield — that’s Capture the Flag, our free green vs red CTF game you play right in your browser. You lead the green team in an 8-versus-8 match: grab the enemy’s red flag, race it back across the map to your base, and be the first team to five captures. There’s nothing to download and no account to make.
What is Capture the Flag?
Capture the Flag is a classic team objective game reimagined on a long, side-scrolling map. The arena is split down the middle: green territory on the left, red on the right, with a rocky no-man’s-land in between. A camera follows your player and a minimap helps you track the action across the whole field. You’re safe on your own half — but the moment you cross onto enemy ground, their defenders can tag you.
It’s the same jump-in-and-play spirit as the rest of our free online browser games, with a big dose of team strategy.
How to play: the controls
- Move with the Arrow Keys.
- Sprint with Shift — stamina is limited, and if it empties it locks for two seconds before recharging, so save it for the escape.
- Hide your flag with Space during the opening phase, and use Space to start or restart.
- Command your squad with C (more on that below).
The 30-second hide phase
Every match opens with a 30-second hide phase. Both teams are locked to their own half and no one can be tagged. Use the time to walk your flag somewhere clever on your side and press Space to plant it — behind a boulder, tucked in a corner, or deep near your base. A well-hidden flag is far harder for the enemy to grab and run.
Grab, run, and the 1-second invincibility
Touch the enemy flag to pick it up. The instant you grab it you get one second of invincibility — just long enough to break through the defenders crowding the flag. But be warned: while you’re carrying a flag, you can be tagged anywhere on the map, even on your own half. There’s no safe zone for a carrier, so keep moving and use your escorts.
If a carrier is tagged, the flag drops where they fell and can be re-grabbed by either team — or a defender can touch their own dropped flag to send it straight home.
Jail and jailbreaks
Get tagged on enemy ground and you’re sent to their jail, deep in enemy territory. A teammate has to fight their way over and tap the jail to free you — each tap frees one prisoner and then has a three-second cooldown, so a big jailbreak takes teamwork and time. Freshly freed players are untaggable for two seconds to give them a fighting chance to escape.
Terrain: gates, boulders and bushes
The battlefield is full of cover. Each base is protected by a rock gate you have to funnel through, scattered boulders break up the midfield, and bushes slow you down while breaking up the chase. Smart players use the terrain to lose a defender or set up an ambush near a gate.
Quick start
- Open Capture the Flag and press Space.
- During the 30s hide phase, move and press Space to plant your flag.
- Grab the red flag and run it back to your base — first to 5 wins.
- Press C to order your squad: charge, hold border, defend, rescue or flank.
Smart bots you can actually command
Your seven green teammates aren’t just running around — they read the situation and take jobs: the nearest free players chase an enemy carrier, spring jailed teammates, or return a dropped flag, while the rest push for the enemy flag and juke past defenders. They path around the terrain instead of jamming into it.
The twist is you can talk to them. Press C, type an order like “charge” or “hold border”, and your squad responds in speech bubbles — they might agree (“copy that!”), argue, or counter with a smarter plan (“bad idea — defend our flag!”). If enough of them disagree, the squad overrules you and does the smart thing. It makes a solo match feel like playing with a real, chatty team — a bit like our multiplayer games to play with friends.
Tips to capture more flags
- Hide your flag well. Use the 30s to tuck it behind cover far from obvious lanes.
- Time your grab. Charge in with teammates so the enemy can’t focus you, and use your 1s invincibility to punch out.
- Keep moving as a carrier. You can be tagged anywhere — never stop to think while holding the flag.
- Call “defend” when you’re ahead. Order the squad to guard, then counter-attack off a turnover.
- Free teammates early. A full jail is a lost 8v8 — send bots to spring them.
Why play Capture the Flag in the browser?
